Beth Terry is an Oakland based accountant who, after learning about the devastating effects of plastic pollution on the environment and human health, began an experiment to see if she could live without buying any new plastic.
Since then, she has reduced her plastic waste to less than 2% of the national average. That experiment turned into the popular blog MyPlasticFreeLife.com and her new book Plastic-Free: How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too.
A founding member of the Plastic Pollution Coalition, Terry gives presentations on plastic-free living and why, despite what some critics assert, our personal actions really do make a difference.
In this episode, Beth shares the story of how and why she first began trying to reduce her plastic footprint, and she tells us about all the challenges and fears and learning lessons along the way. She offers practical starting points and advice for people who might be looking to make a similar change, and we have a great conversation about change in general - the obstacles to making a change in your life, how isolating it can feel to be making different choices from those around you, and more. We also talk about perfectionism, and how it’s the enemy of change, and Beth shares how she tackles her own perfectionism - a tip I personally really needed to hear! Whether you’re interested in reducing your plastic use or not, I have a feeling you’ll get something good from this conversation. I certainly did!
