Dominique Jackson is a professional runner who competed at the 2016 US Olympic Trials in the women's 800m event.
A Northern California native, Dominique attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and recently moved to Sacramento to work as a volunteer coach at Sacramento State University.
In addition to running, she's a self-described undercover foodie and interior design junkie, all of which collide on her website: nikkishaven.com.
In this episode, Dominique and I go deep into her life as a runner. We talk about perfectionism and self doubt, and about what her self-talk sounds like when things get hard during a workout or race.
She shares about her childhood - growing up with two drug abusing parents - and how running was her ticket to afford college, create a better life for herself, and set an example for her younger siblings.
She also talks honestly to me about her experience at the 2016 Olympic Trials, and the complex emotions of not making it out of the preliminary round herself and then watching her friend Kate Grace, who competes in the same event, go on to win the finals and head to Rio.
All in all, this is a conversation about pushing yourself, about not getting stuck in a cycle of bad choices, and about the courage you need in order to take risks and try to be the best. I hope you enjoy it!
